I'm back again with another one of my braided hair tutorials. I did the side braid, the side braid ponytail and now I'm sharing how to create an easy halo braid on short hair. Braiding hair can seem like a daunting task but I promise, it's so much easier to do than you think. Yes, practice makes perfect, but the best part about this halo braid is that the messier it is, the better.
Products Needed To Create The Halo Braid
Honestly, you don't need much to create the perfect little crown braid. Typically I do this braid on hair that hasn't been washed in a day or two or was curled with a wand recently. It all depends on your hair texture and type. A couple of clear elastics, a hair clip, and some bobby pins and you're good to go!
How To Create An Easy Halo Braid On Short Hair
step 1: part hair
Part hair down the middle and clip one side so the sections stay separate. This will make creating even braids on both sides a lot easier.
step 2: start braiding
Staring on one side, divide a small section of hair into three parts and begin to braid. I do the dutch braid style – meaning I cross the hair sections UNDER each other, not on top. This makes the french braid appear "on top" of your hair instead of underneath (like in this tutorial).
As you go down the side of your head, grab small sections from just the front portion (near your face) to add to the braid each time. You'll only be adding the small additional section to the larger section that's closest to your face before adding it into the main braid.
step 3: secure with elastic
My hair is very short, so it's impossible to get every last little piece of hair on my own when I do a braid. I go down as far as I can doing the dutch style French braid then switch to a "regular" braid at the end as best I can. If a little mullet section hangs out the bottom that's totally fine. Secure the bottom with a clear elastic.
step 4: start braiding again
On the other side of your head, repeat steps 2 and 3. Again, don't worry if you can't get all the hair into the braid, we'll clean it up in the last step.
step 5: loosen the braid
To get that loose easy-breezy braid look, you'll want to pull out some of the braids to give the illusion of volume. While holding the elastic band end in one hand, use the other to gently pull out some of the curved sections of your braid. Again, don't pull too hard or too much, but go down the line on each side of the braid to soften the appearance of the braid.
step 6: secure with bobby pins
To create the illusion of a halo or crown, use bobby pins to connect the two elastic ends together at the base of your head/neck. Given that my hair is so short, I actually like the look of it appearing a little messy once it comes together. But if you want it to be a little cleaner I'd just pay attention more to where you pin.
The Final Look: Halo Braid On Short Hair
And there you have it, that's it! You can see me rocking this halo braid in one of my recent blog posts too. (And for those wondering, that white bandage on my back is from when I had to go to the dermatologist and do a chemical test for an allergy. I'm fine, just ignore it, LOL!)
The best part of this crown braid look is that I can even sleep in it. I'll just take the bobby pins out and sleep with the two braided pigtails secured with the elastics. Then in the morning I just put the pins back in.
