The Walking Dead has spawned tons of hilarious memes about its characters, plotlines, actors, and more. In many cases, only true fans will totally understand them and get the humor. Many of them are, as the saying goes, inside jokes. They play on everything from how Rick says "Carl" to how Carol is not the timid housewife she sometimes makes herself out to be, and how some characters have always existed in the shadows of more popular ones.

Now with the show about to come to an end, and fans choosing theWalking Dead characters they want to see make it to the end, it's the perfect time to reflect on some of the more ridiculous aspects of the long-running zombie series, and what better way to do that than through memes?

Updated on September 29th, 2021 by Christine Persaud: 11 years and going strong, The Walking Dead might be coming to an end, but that doesn't mean fans have stopped turning memorable moments into meme-able ones. What's more, there are plenty of "oldie but goodie" memes that depict images from previous seasons that not only remind fans about pivotal moments (and characters) from the show but set the scene beautifully for the final season too.

12 All About Glenn

The episodes involving Negan walked around in a circle, trying to decide which person from Rick's group would become the sacrificial lamb, were dragged out for so long. It was promising to be a huge moment, and fans were trying desperately to figure out who would see the end of Negan's barbed-wire bat, Lucille.

It turns out it wasn't one, but two people who died in that episode, providing evidence to suggest that Negan from The Walking Dead does not deserve redemption. And while Abraham was the first victim, fans grieved far more passionately for the second victim, Glenn. He was beloved by fans from day one, and the gross way his face was bashed in overshadowed Abraham's death so the poor guy was pretty much forgotten.

11 I Don't Wanna Shower!

Via: Funny or Die on Pinterest

One of the running jokes, once the group made their way to Alexandria, was about Daryl and his lack of hygiene. Despite living in a nice community that had running water, plenty of food, and electricity thanks to solar panels, Daryl still looked like he hadn't showered, washed up, or brushed his hair in weeks.

It was tough for Daryl to go back to living like a real human being, especially after having been in the wild for so long. This meme perfectly captures a conversation he might have had with Carol once she decided that enough was enough and she couldn't take the smell or the dirt on her carpets anymore.

10 Coral!

The running joke about British actor Andrew Lincoln's American accent on the show is the way he pronounced Carl's name. When he said it, it often sounded like he was saying "Coral" rather than "Carl."

This meme-maker took it to another level, placing little Carl heads at the bottom of the ocean within a bunch of coral. A clownfish with Rick's head is seemingly trying to save the Carl coral, with a logo that is done in the style and font of the Pixar film Finding Nemo.

9 Wait, What?

Any fan of the show will recall the moment in the pilot when Rick happened upon this sign. And everyone probably wondered the same thing noted in this meme. It is supposed to say, "Don't Open. Dead Inside," but most people are hard-wired to read from left to right, which would make it say, "Don't Dead. Open Inside."

It makes sense that someone in the apocalypse would write quickly and not stop to think about perfect word placement. Nonetheless, the meme is pretty hilarious because it shows something many fans were also thinking at the time.

8 Hide 'N Seek Champ

Sophia, Carol's biological daughter and one of the best child characters from The Walking Dead, was the first— and arguably most emotional— death of a child on the show. After the group searched high and low for her for weeks after she disappeared during a walker attack, she emerged slowly from Hershel's barn, apparently one of the dead he locked inside in hopes that a cure would be found.

It really was like a morbid game of hide and seek. And in the end, Sophia won— except she paid the ultimate price to be the victor.

7 We Need The Rednecks

Via: Scifiaddicts.com

Daryl was the one person in the initial group who had no direction in his life prior to the apocalypse. He was pretty much just coasting along with his older brother, getting into bar fights, and probably doing plenty of other unsavory things. He was also a self-professed redneck.

Most of the people Daryl found himself aligned with in the apocalypse would likely never have spent time with him in the old world. He grew up very differently from them. But the skills he learned from his hardened life are what helped get Daryl through the apocalypse and make him a valuable resource. And all of a sudden, rednecks aren't made fun of anymore.

6 Fangirling

For a long time, Daryl was the heartthrob of the show. Many fans loved to see his bulging muscles and brooding face. But then Jesus came along. He had long hair and a goatee, incredible martial arts skills, and piercing blue eyes.

In reality, Daryl is chasing down Jesus in this scene because he doesn't know who he is and thinks he could be a threat. But the meme makes it look like Daryl is angry because Jesus is the new pretty boy on the show, about to steal his thunder. Of course, fans of the show know that Jesus is now long gone and Daryl is back to his official singular heartthrob status on the show, though, the transformed Negan from The Walking Dead could give Daryl a run for his money!

5 Cookies & Casseroles

Only true fans will understand this meme. Carol from The Walking Dead has changed a lot since season 1, from a timid presence to someone who can hold her own and fight her own battles, not to mention save entire communities with her crafty skills and strategic moves. But When the group integrated into Alexandrian life, Carol didn't want to show all her cards.

So, she put on a show, pretending to be your average neighbor, baking cookies and making casseroles so no one would know how skilled she was. Whether her cooking and baking were actually any good is another story.

4 Fading To The Background

Via: HorrorSociety.com

While Beth's death was one of the show's most emotional, it was mostly because of the reactions of Daryl and Maggie. Even though the show invested a whole story arc in one season about Beth and her time at the hospital, fans never really got into her character, resulting in Beth become one of the most despised supporting characters from The Walking Dead. She was always secondary and there was nothing particularly compelling about her.

In this meme, the soft-spoken young woman is probably writing about what happened that day. But the joke is that she's really spilling her thoughts about how she longs to be noticed on the show before her time is officially up.

3 The Most Hated Character... Oh No, Wait

Via @RickAndThangs on Twitter

It's no secret that, for some time, Lori was considered the most hated character from the show. She seemingly abandoned her sick husband in the middle of an apocalypse and took up with his best friend and former partner. She then generally did things that made fans cringe - there was just something about her that was not likable. It seemed tough to top.

But then came Gabriel. He was cowardly and locked his entire group of parishioners out of the church, leaving them for dead. Interestingly, Gabriel has had one of the best character arcs and enjoyed one of the best character redemptions on The Walking Dead. This meme reminds fans that big changes on the show are always just around the corner.

2 Judith Is In Charge

Via Sizzle.com

It was evident from the very first scene when Judith was introduced that she was a force to be reckoned with. Even though Rick and Michonne were not her biological parents, she learned a lot from both of them and acquired their skills and determination. So despite her young age – she wasn't even yet a teenager – many fans felt she could actually lead the group better than some of the adults could.

She was confident, skilled with a knife and gun, and level-headed. Wise beyond her years, Judith remains among the best characters on the show. Using a screenshot of a famous scene from the 1986 movieAliens, this meme asks why Judith wasn't put in charge right from the start.

1 The Spawn Of Satan

Via Quotesbae.com

There's a lot of chatter among fans about who is the worst villain on The Walking Dead. And while many have seemed to settle on Alpha as winning that terrifying award following her time on the show, it used to be a fight between the Governor and Negan. If this meme has anything to say about it, Negan is the clear winner.

While the Governor was unhinged and did very terrible things, including beheading Hershel right in front of his family and friends, Negan literally bashed two mens' heads in, showing a complete disregard for human life. He also lied, cheated, and stole from everyone and anyone while seemingly having his wits about him arguably better than the Governor did. That makes him even more dangerous and, as this meme suggests, the spawn of the Devil himself.
